item two International Schools Island www.shambles.net/secondlife

International Schools Island continues to grow ... in Second Life, the 3D online virtual world.
I've run more presentations in-world since the last newsletter and feel I've now moved from "novice virtual educator" to "now having fun" .... and learning even more from other residents.

Data Visualisation: http://slurl.com/secondlife/International%20Schools/26/84/25
I've been to several talks over the past few months about Data Visualisation (DV) in SL ... so decided to build a DV display/exhibition in Int.Schs.Island.
This project went a little further than I anticipated ... I also built a 3D graphing tool ... which I suspect may also have other teaching/learning uses rather than just DV ... it is free for you to take.
All in the lobby of the Technology Tower.

3rd Island Added with a Holodeck:
New SIM delivered to the International Schools Estate on 12 Dec 2008
In fact it's not a full SIM but called an OpenSpace ... same physical size but with less prims to build and some other restrictions ... but the monthly rental is cheaper than a full SIM.
From 5th January 2009 OpenSpaces were converted to what is being called "Homesteads" ... see details at http://tinyurl.com/5fwaqb
The Island has one main item on it .... a Holodeck

item five Plagiarism and Copyright www.shambles.net/plagiarism

Plagiarism and Copyright has it's own page on the Shambles website; feedback suggested that it was not so easy to find teaching materials and urls for this topic.
I've had a spring clean and there are now two new areas on the page "Plagiarism and Copyright : Webquests" and "Plagiarism and Copyright : Teaching and Tutorial" ... hopefully this will make browsing a little more convenient.

Creative Commons http://creativecommons.org
If you are not familiar with the "Creative Commons" method of copyrighting your work ... so it is clear what rights you are giving others to use your work ... then it would be time well spent visiting this webpage ... or view the videos.

Flickr Creative Commons www.flickr.com/creativecommons
Many Flickr users have chosen to offer their work under a Creative Commons license, and you can browse or search through content under each type of license .... over 100,000,000 images.

Not to be confused with ...

Flickr Commons http://flickr.com/commons and www.indicommons.org/about
... "the world's public photo collections"
"The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world's public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer."
The Historians should particularly like this collection.

cNet News reported .... The task force conclusions included ...
"... actual threats that youth may face appear to be different than the threats most people imagine" and that "the image presented by the media of an older male deceiving and preying on a young child does not paint an accurate picture of the nature of the majority of sexual solicitations and Internet-initiated offline encounters."
and
... that children and teens are less vulnerable to sexual predation than many have feared.
The report also questions the efficacy and necessity of some commonly prescribed remedies designed to protect young people.
