EtherPad : Real Time (text) Collaboration
http://etherpad.com/
EtherPad : Real Time (text) Collaboration
Other "real-time" editors like Google Docs work by broadcasting an updated copy of the document to everyone every 15 seconds. This creates a noticeable lag that gets in the way of collaboration. You start editing something, only to find 10 seconds later that someone else deleted it.
Etherpad updates every copy of the document every half second. This 30x increase in speed changes the experience completely. Your edits hardly ever clash with other users'. So you work confidently instead of tentatively.
Why doesn't Google Docs update every half second like Etherpad does? Because it's really, really hard. We're fairly experienced programmers, and to make this work we had to solve problems that, as far as we know, no one had solved before.

Interactive whiteboards in the Classroom (Report Oct07)
www.futurelab.org.uk/events/listing/whiteboards/report
Interactive whiteboards in the Classroom (Report Oct07) from Futurelab UK
The key aims of this report are to extract some of the key findings relating to the use of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in UK classrooms from the research literature.
From these findings we then extrapolate some of the key issues and debates in order to put forward some initial recommendations relating to more effective use, and also some ideas and suggestions for potential future developments in terms of teaching, training, use and design of IWBs.
The overall intention is to help us move away from simplistic arguments around whether IWBs are ‘good’ or ‘bad’ per se, to ones that are more nuanced and sophisticated, which consider the optimum conditions for effective use; the factors that may support such use; the aspects that may influence future developments; as well as the types of evidence needed that will enable us to implement appropriate changes.

The DfES Primary Schools Whiteboard Expansion project
The DfES Primary Schools Whiteboard Expansion project (PSWE) provided substantial funding to 21 local authorities in 2003-04 to support the acquisition and use of interactive whiteboards in primary schools.
The research was carried out between September 2004 and December 2006
Becta highlights the fact that primary pupils can gain 2.5-7.5 months progress (in a period of somewhat over a year) through use of an interactive whiteboard (IWB) in maths, English and science. Rates of additional progress depend on the subject and level of attainment of pupils, with high achieving girls doing better in KS1 maths, while low attaining boys benefited more in KS2 writing.

Interactive Whiteboard Reviews
There is quite a debate about whiteboards at the moment. On the one hand thrifty ICT co-ordinators consider them an expensive luxury. On the other, those who have used them never want them to be taken away!
We catalogued the debate in a previous article, but for the moment, some feedback from association members who have trailled the boards themselves. Not just in a comfy office, or a demonstration hall we might add, but in a class with children on a day to day basis.
" The Smartboard wins in our opinion because the software can always be improved. The physical method of interacting with the board can?."

Enhancing teaching and learning with interactive whiteboards : ICT in Primary (online magazine) February 2005
Research also suggests that the motivational aspect of interactive whiteboards is one of the key factors for using them. This is certainly true when they are used effectively. Children are more motivated to learn when the environment the teacher creates encourages them to become full participants in the learning process.
This article highlights :
-Using interactive whiteboards with pupils at the Foundation Stage
-Using maps on an interactive whiteboard
-Using the interactive whiteboard to observe shadows in a Year 2 science classroom
Using an interactive whiteboard in a Year 4 group session on literacy
-Using an interactive whiteboard to develop evaluation skills in a Year 6 class
