Social Networking on YouTube
Based on a one-year ethnographic project, this article analyzes how YouTube participants developed and maintained social networks by manipulating physical and interpretive access to their videos. The analysis reveals how circulating and sharing videos reflects different social relationships among youth. It also identifies varying degrees of "publicness" in video sharing.

Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship
Social network sites (SNSs) are increasingly attracting the attention of academic and industry researchers intrigued by their affordances and reach.
This special theme section of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication brings together scholarship on these emergent phenomena. In this introductory article, we describe features of SNSs and propose a comprehensive definition.
We then present one perspective on the history of such sites, discussing key changes and developments. After briefly summarizing existing scholarship concerning SNSs, we discuss the articles in this special section and conclude with considerations for future research.

Social networking: Overprotection or ...
http://education.guardian.co.uk/link/story/0,,2277968,00.html
Alternative social networking: Overprotection or necessary control?
Social networking sites, where users post personal profiles, upload favourite music and video, chat and blog, are just the latest technological innovation to send shivers down parental spines, as the Byron review reflects.
In the UK 49% of eight- to 17-year-olds are believed to have a profile on a social networking site, according to Ofcom.
Besides the risk of making "online friends" with strangers who turn out to be adults and anything but friendly, social networking sites may offer a platform for cyber-bullying and intense exposure to advertising. But the review also cites evidence that social networking sites like MySpace and Bebo may play a useful role in offering teenagers a place to "test various adolescent behaviours or to take 'safe' risks".

Studeous : connecting your classroom
We created Studeous because we belive that education is priceless. The Learning Management Systems (LMS) currently available are poorly designed and too expensive. The open source systems are too confusing and difficult to maintain. Finally, an easy to use, intuitive, and safe LMS is available to the academic world for free.
Studeous is completely free. We don't care if your entire school runs on it, we will never charge you
The only information people can see is your name and email address, and you can even make your email address private if you want. As a teacher, you have total control over who has access to your class page and any content you post. You can remove your account at any time.

Review of Social Aggregators / LIfestreaming Services
http://www.fabricoffolly.com/2008/03/review-of-social-aggregators.html
Review of Social Aggregators / LIfestreaming Services
The difficulty in keeping track of one's activity on an increasing number of social media sites (Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, etc.) has, somewhat ironically, spawned a whole new breed of site - the social aggregator (a.k.a. lifestreaming services).
Here is a review of 15 products currently in this space. I've tried to keep the focus on aggregators, rather than services which have more of an emphasis on inputting new content (e.g. microblogging platforms such as Tumblr or Jaiku) although the lines are clearly blurred.

Social media aggregators
http://tinyurl.com/66hol6
Social media aggregators are web sites which amass what you do on social networks or websites and centralize it all in one location.
These aggregators enable lifestreaming, which is a simply the publication and sharing of your daily activities in continuous sessions. These social lifestreams allow you to keep track of what your friends or other people are doing online.
In other words, they are tools you can use to observe the activity of others on various social sites or allow others to follow what youre doing all around the web.
One of the most popular social aggregators is called Friendfeed and it appears to be the most widely used service amongst many other lifestreaming services.

Ofcom research identifies social networking profiles
Nearly half of all children who have access to the internet have their own personal profile on a social networking site, according to extensive qualitative and quantitative Ofcom research published today.
The report reveals just how quickly social networking sites have become a part of Britons' lives. As well as widespread use amongst 8-17 year olds (49 per cent of internet users in that age group), the report also reveals that over a fifth (22 per cent) of adult internet users aged 16+ have their own online profile.

Testing Horace Mann
When students created Facebook pages that viciously attacked a teacher, and when their wealthy parents on the schools board defended them, Horace Mann was forced to confront a series of questions: Is a Facebook page private, like a diary? Is big money distorting private-school education? And what values is a school supposed to teach?

47 Social News Networks
http://www.doshdosh.com/list-of-social-media-news-websites/
47 Social News Networks
There are a great deal of social news sites on the internet, sometimes too many. Most of them are dormant and are no longer active, largely because they were poorly marketed and hence, never had an active community of users in the first place.
You dont have a lot of time on your hands. You want a community that gives you fresh news on topics you care about. You want something that sends prospects and traffic while branding your website or business. You want a social news site with a long term returns on investment. Heres a list of some of them.
Some of the sites on this list have a broad topical focus while others are created to cater to a specific niche. Ive divided the list into two portions: General Social News or websites which cover a wide variety of news and Niche Social News which refers to specialized sites that only focus on a limited range of niche topics.

Badoo was brought to life in London in 2006 by a small group of young, forward thinking programmers and tech entrepreneurs. The idea was to create a social website that would transcend all national boundaries, but at the same time, save the local unique culture of its users.

Ozmozr
http://www.ozmozr.com/
In addition to its functionality as an aggregator, OsmoseRSS encourages social interaction to help users find others with similar interests. Users tag RSS feeds as they add them to OsmoseRSS. When the RSS feeds are pulled into OsmoseRSS, the system processes the incoming data for tags embedded in the data and includes those tags as part of the description of each entry. Just like del.icio.us and flickr, those tags are exposed to the entire community. Users can then find other resources that have been tagged with keywords that are of interest.
In addition, the source of each feed is tracked so that users can find and connect with people with similar interests. This exposes users to content that is being added by other individuals and to the individuals who are producing data. This results in a relatively high likelihood of discovery of other data or people who are of interest.
OsmoseRSS encourages the formation of groups where users with similar ideas or interests can gather to share open resources. Groups inside OsmoseRSS can share resources, collaboratively filter and rank resources, review one another's work, create a shared folksonomy, and discover new people and resources.
