Primer to Virtual World Design

A virtual Realist Primer to Virtual World Design
In this text I have tried to relate Heim’s theoretical framework to some of the issues that I believe to be important in understanding virtual world design in the form of four lessons.
After the account of these lessons I will take a closer look at the issues of structure, function and interaction in relation to one of my own design projects, as an attempt to make sense of these lessons in a concrete design process.

Once booted you have access to a fully functional SecondLife compatible simulator. You can control it from your browser. You can build, upload textures, terraform, and many other things available in regular SecondLife.
This project allows you to save the prim data from your builds in a nice XML file that you can save on your machine, email to your friends and very soon be able to upload into SecondLife itself effectively marking this project as the first effective offline building tool for the masses. Enjoy it, because it's completely free.

Also like many others, Darren had watched many other attempts at open source virtual world servers fail, often due to the massive task of writing both a server and a client at the same time.

Getting Real Work Done In Virtual Worlds
Virtual worlds like Second Life, There.com, and more business-focused offerings are on the brink of becoming valuable work tools. Major companies and public-sector organizations — such as BP, IBM, Intel, and the US Army — are investing heavily in virtual world technologies.
But it's still early, pioneering days. You've practically got to be a gamer to use most of these tools — setup can be arduous, navigating in a 3-D environment takes practice, and processing and bandwidth requirements remain high.

Metaplace

Metaplace is a next-generation virtual worlds platform designed to work the way the Web does. Instead of giant custom clients and huge downloads, Metaplace lets you play the same game on any platform that reads our open client standard. We hope there will be millions of worlds made with Metaplace. It could get hard to find stuff if we're right, so the portal lets you easily search, rate, review, and tag worlds and games of all sorts. You also get a user profile so you can find each other.
According to the official website, the platform is "client-agnostic", which means that virtual worlds developed on Metaplace can be accessed using any device that connects to the Web.

Disney Toontown : Virtual World
http://play.toontown.com/webHome.php
Disney Toontown : Virtual World .. free initial trial and then subscription based
It is worth noting as the first MMOG project created with children as young as age 7 in mind. This brightly colored cartoon environment offers kids (and their parents) the chance to play games, outfit their toon avatars, own a toon house, and battle the "Evil Cog Robots" trying to take over Toontown and turn it into a bland, black and white, skyscraper-filled, fun-deprived place.
"Like its offline inspiration (Disney World), Toontown is designed to make kids feel that this is a space where they are in charge. Things like squirt guns and pies in the face are not only encouraged but specifically incorporated into the game as official battle tactics to be used against the Cogs. A kid-centered world does have its limits, however. Communication is limited to a drop-down menu of phrases called "Speed Chat".
The only way to converse freely with someone in Toontown is to make them a "secret friend" which requires both parties to enter a password exchanged outside the game. This may limit the world's development as a social space, but it does ensure a higher level of safety."

Hello! This is Betsy Book, creator of Virtual Worlds Review. For three years, VWR offered a basic guide to persistent online 2D and 3D virtual worlds that emphasize social interaction (MMOSGs). I launched the site on April 15, 2003 and since then have witnessed a surge in interest in all different kinds of virtual worlds.
In February 2006, I signed on as a full-time staff member of Makena Technologies, creators of the social virtual world There. Because I felt it would not be possible to provide truly objective reviews of other virtual worlds, I placed VWR "on hold" at that time. As of now I have no further plans to offer future updates.
