Alka-Seltzer Experiments

Alka-Seltzer Experiments
Not only does Alka-Seltzer help you to feel better fast, it's also pretty cool to watch!
The familiar fizzing you hear when you drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into a glass of water is the result of a chemical reaction. It's also the perfect tool for demonstrating some very nifty science principles; things like the factors affecting the rates of chemical reactions, or the colors produced by a chemical reaction.

Blue Goo

Blue Goo
Many kids have written to us asking for recipes for “slimy, goopy stuff.” Here’s a recipe for Blue Goo. IMPORTANT: Blue Goo is to play with, not to eat.
Blue Goo is a non-Newtonian fluid, which means it is neither a liquid nor a solid but has properties of both.

Changing States of Matter (Dry Ice)
http://outreach.rice.edu/~dgabby/science/dry_ice/dry_ice.htm
Changing States of Matter (Dry Ice)
Carbon dioxide usually is a gas. However, it can be made into a solid. We call this "dry ice." It is called this because it does not melt! It changes from a solid to a gas. When matter changes from a solid straight to a gas we call this process sublimation. Dry ice is used to keep things cold.

The Water Cycle
http://tinyurl.com/hey7e
The Water Cycle
Water exists on the planet mainly as a liquid with solid ice in extremely cold regions. Heat from the sun evaporates water from the sea.
This water vapour rises into the air where it cools and condenses to form clouds of water droplets, or if the cloud is high enough, ice crystals. As the atmospheric conditions change this water falls as rain hail sleet or snow. Water then sinks into the ground until it hits the water table, flows into rivers and streams and back to the sea where the cycle starts again.

Changing State - 4learning

Where does all the rain come from? It can't all come from the clouds, or they would be empty. No, it is part of a cycle - and the rain goes back up into the sky to fall again and again. This process is called the rain cycle. It involves evaporation and condensation.

Changing state (5d)
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/science/sci5d/?view=get
Through this unit children consolidate their ideas about changes of state which can be reversed. They use their understanding to explain a range of familiar phenomena.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
-making observations and measurements and presenting these
-identifying patterns in results
-suggesting explanations for observations and conclusions in terms of scientific knowledge and understanding.
Work also offers opportunities for using IT (see IT Units 5B 'Analysing data and asking questions: using complex searches' and 5C 'Evaluating information, checking accuracy and questioning plausibility') to obtain, collect, retrieve and present data and using knowledge and understanding of science to explain and interpret everyday observations related to changes of state.
This unit takes approximately 12 hours.
