Filtering and sieving

Filtering and sieving.
We can use a sieve ( anything with regular holes in it) to catch large particles and let smaller ones through.
We choose a sieve that will let through the particles we want to pass whilst keeping larger ones behind. Soils are often sieved by gardeners before small seeds are planted to give them a fine texture.
In science we call very fine sieves filters,-the holes may be small enough to catch microscopic particles, but the idea of letting small things through and stopping bigger ones is still the same.

Solids and Liquids - 4learning

If you can pour solids - like flour or sugar - and liquids like water or oil, what's the difference between them?
Some solids do not dissolve in liquids. They may sink to the bottom. They may float in the liquid. They are undissolved. You can filter them out.

Solids, liquids and how they can be separated (4d)
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/science/sci4d/?view=get
In this unit children learn about the differences between solids and liquids and recognise that the same material can exist as both solid and liquid. They identify changes that occur when solids and liquids are mixed and how to separate undissolved solids from a liquid. They learn that melting and dissolving are different and recognise that when a solid dissolves it is still there.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
-deciding what apparatus to use
-making and recording observations and measurements
-drawing conclusions.
Work in this unit also offers opportunities for children to explain everyday observations about processes such as dissolving and filtering using scientific ideas.
This unit takes approximately 11 hours.
