Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Solids, Liquids and Gases.
A substance can exist in one of three different states- solid, liquid or gas.
Everything is made of tiny particles, how close together they are determines what the substance will be like. If the particles gain energy they move about further and faster and change the state of the substance.
In solids the particles are close together and the solid always keeps its shape. Think of an ice cube.
In liquids the particles are further apart- the liquid flows, it takes the shape of a container it is put into. If you pour water into a bottle it takes the shape of the bottle.
Gases fill any space available and will not stay in an open container. They are also easily compressed (squashed). Think of steam coming from a kettle or of air going in to your bike tyres.

Can you imagine iron gas? It is a possibility. Gases are one of the three states of matter, along with solids and liquids. Materials can exist in these three states - but we usually only see one or two.

Gases around us (5c)
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes2/science/sci5c/?view=get
Through this unit children learn that gases are material and can be distinguished from solids and liquids by their properties. They also learn about the uses of some important gases and where gases are found.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
making and repeating observations
relating observations and conclusions to scientific knowledge and understanding.
Work in this unit also offers opportunities for children to use scientific knowledge and understanding to explain everyday phenomena related to air and other gases.
This unit takes approximately 10 hours.
