This Code sets out expectations of conduct and practice for registered
teachers. Its purpose is to guide teachers’ everyday judgements and actions,
and provide the GTCE with principles to use in regulating the profession. The
GTCE developed the Code with teachers and others with an interest in
teaching and learning. It reflects the standards that teachers expect of
themselves and others expect of the profession.

Eight principles expected of teachers under the new code of conduct:
-Put the wellbeing, development and progress of children and young people first.
-Take responsibility for maintaining the quality of their teaching practice.
-Help children and young people to become confident and successful learners.
-Demonstrate respect for diversity and promote equality.
-Strive to establish productive partnerships with parents and carers.
-Work as part of a whole-school team.
-Co-operate with other professionals in the children’s workforce.
-Demonstrate honesty and integrity and uphold public trust and confidence in the teaching profession

A revised framework of professional standards for teachers has been published by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). The revised standards come into affect in Sept 2007.
They form the first clear, progressive framework of standards for teachers and a key element of the 'new professionalism' agenda.
The standards are statements of a teacher’s professional attributes, knowledge and understanding, and skills. They clarify expectations at each career stage and what progression looks like.
The standards will act as backdrop to the revised performance management arrangements, helping teachers identify how they need to develop professionally to progress in their careers.
