Leaving your class with a substitute teacher doesn't have to be a negative experience.
If you have advance notice of your absence, you can provide detailed instructions for your substitute, including a copy of class expectations and your lesson plans.
Ask your substitute teacher to complete a feedback form, so you know what happened while you were gone.
With a little preparation, your students can have a productive day, and your substitute teacher can make a successful contribution.

"Subbing" can be a great professional teaching experience. You can choose which assignments you take. It gives you the opportunity to explore grade levels, subject areas, and schools. However, "Murphy's Law" also is the Rule of the Day, too. If something can go wrong, it will. Some schools may not have adequate lesson plans when you arrive, teacher's editions to texts, or even student materials. This website was created to survive those "blisters" and enjoy the "blessings" of substitute teaching.

Tips for Substitute Teachers
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/8020/subtips.html
Tips for Substitute Teachers
Anyone who has ever substitute taught knows that it can be rewarding, yet hard, work. I think substitute teaching is tougher than student teaching in many aspects. At least when I was student teaching I was able to spend time with the students and develop a rapport with them. A substitute is in-and-out. Usually it's a one day shot. Often they don't know you, and you don't know them.

The DfES Supply Teaching site (UK)
http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/supplyteachers/
The DfES Supply Teaching site pulls together material about supply teaching for all the relevant audiences. So, whether you are a supply teacher, work in an agency or LEA to match schools with teachers, or recruit supply staff in a school, your page on this site should be able to provide you with helpful guidance, and directions to other useful sites.
As part of the Government's commitment to raising the effectiveness of supply teaching and nurturing the skills specific to this sector, the DfES has commissioned a range of self-study materials for use in the professional development of supply teachers.
The materials comprise five books, designed for supply teachers' independent study. This website includes the materials in full, plus an online library of useful websites.

Paraeducator-to-Teacher Career Ladder Programs
http://www.usc.edu/dept/education/CMMR/Clearinghouse.html
Paraeducator-to-Teacher Career Ladder Programs
The (USA) nation's nearly 500,000 paraeducators represent a promising source of prospective new teachers, at once more representative of and more rooted in the communities in which they serve. Current research (Genzuk & Baca, 1998; Genzuk, 1997; Haselkorn & Fideler, 1996) suggests that well prepared paraeducator-to-teacher program graduates bring a wealth of community and student knowledge to their practice, attributes that are highly regarded in today's diverse classrooms.
This NCPR clearinghouse is committed to the charge of providing a comprehensive repository of information, as well as a forum to further the discussion, for achieving the goal of bringing talented paraeducators into the ranks of our nation's teaching force.
