Teaching Zack to Think
Is your high school teaching students to access the Internet for research? Then it is essential that students also learn how to validate the information.
The Internet is a place where you can find "proof" of essentially any belief system that you can imagine. And, for too many students, "If it is on the Internet, it is true."

The Burmese Mountain Dog
http://descy.50megs.com/akcj3/bmd.html
The Burmese Mountain Dog
The Burmese Mountain Dog is a medium sized, muscular dog originally bred in Burma (Myanmar) to guard Buddhist temples. It was bred to guard the temples, and keep the temples free of rodents and beggars. It is also known as the Burmese Temple Dog. In 1954, a group of Burmese Opium Lords set up a standard for the Burmese Mountain Dog which has remained virtually unchanged ever since. The Burmese Mountain Dog Club of America was established in 1985 to foster the breed in the United States and the world.

A short introduction to the study of Holocaust revisionism,
http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~abutz/di/intro.html
A short introduction to the study of Holocaust revisionism
I see three principal reasons for the widespread but erroneous belief in the legend of millions of Jews killed by the Germans during World War II: US and British troops found horrible piles of corpses in the west German camps they captured in 1945 (e.g. Dachau and Belsen), there are no longer large communities of Jews in Poland, and historians generally support the legend.

The Museum of Hoaxes
http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/
The Museum of Hoaxes
Yes, many people have gone to jail for perpetrating hoaxes. The cases that spring most readily to mind are Count Victor Lustig (the famous con man who died in Alcatraz while serving time for the scams he committed), Oscar Hartzell (perpetrator of the Drake Inheritance Hoax), Stanley Clifford Weyman (who fooled President Harding into meeting with Princess Fatima of Afghanistan), Princess Caraboo, Mark Jakob (of the Emulex hoax), and Joseph Howard (of the 1864 Civil War Gold Hoax). There are many others.
But there are really two different kinds of hoaxes: those that are meant to be exposed, and those that are not. Typically, perpetrators of the former kind will not face any punishment. Perpetrators of the latter kind will be sent to jail.

The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus.html
The Pacific Northwest tree octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) can be found in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America.
Their habitat lies on the Eastern side of the Olympic mountain range, adjacent to Hood Canal.
These solitary cephalopods reach an average size (measured from arm-tip to mantle-tip,) of 30-33 cm. Unlike most other cephalopods, tree octopi are amphibious, spending only their early life and the period of their mating season in their ancestrial aquatic environment.

The Jackalope (Lepus-temperamentalus)
http://www.sudftw.com/jackcon.htm
The Jackalope (Lepus-temperamentalus) is one of the rarest animals in the world. A cross between a now extinct pygmy-deer and a species of killer-rabbit, they are extremely shy unless approached. None have ever been captured alive and this rare photo (often criticized as fake) shows a mighty buck about to strike.
Known by the ancients as "deerbunnies", it wasn't until the early 1960's that the modern more fearsome name of "jackalope" was adopted (see True Stories below).

Mankato, Minnesota is truly a wonderland. Tucked into the Emerald Green Valley in Southern Minnesota, it is the hidden vacation Mecca of scores of knowing Midwesterners. Mankato has everything thanks to a freak of nature: the Farr/Sclare Fissure.
This fissure in the earth's crust takes water seeping through the earth, heats it to well over 165 degrees, and sends it back up to the surface in steam pits and boil holes.

Hungarian Velcro Crop
It is windy here but, mysteriously, Zoltan Dudai's field hat does not blow off his head. With a twinkle in his eye, the wiry Magyar, 52, tears off his hat, producing the unmistakable ripping sound made by only one substance on earth. Proudly, he shows his foreign visitor the secret-a velcro hat liner and its mate, a black velcro band around his head. "We are a velcro people," he boasts. "The blood that my ancestors spilled on this ground now gives life to our crop, and our crop keeps our garments securely fastened!"

Case Analysis of an Historic Killer Tornado
http://www.cimms.ou.edu/~doswell/Conference_papers/SELS96/WoO.html
Although the tornado of 10 June 1938 has been known about, at least anecdotally, within the scientific community since it was brought to light in 1939 by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, this potentially rich source of historic information has lain fallow. It is within this rich field of mobile, American thinking that we undertake this effort. A team of scientists with courage, brains, and even heart brought the resources to bear on the challenge.

The Spaghetti Tree
http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/5299/90437
The Spaghetti Tree
Many years ago scientists came up with the idea of growing spaghetti on trees. This was as a result from a lot of pressure put upon the Government by a large population which consumes trillions of pieces of spaghetti annually.
One of the reasons behind this was the ever-spiralling cost of spaghetti in the supermarkets. Another reason was that because there are now more city folk than country folk consumers of spaghetti, (Government Bureau of Statistics Census figures) there was a tendency to want an easier way to get spaghetti.
What easier way than to have it growing outside your own backdoor!

Greenpeas International Homepage
Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is perhaps the single most prevalent of all chemicals that can be dangerous to human life. Despite this truth, most people are not unduly concerned about the dangers of Dihydrogen Monoxide. Governments, civic leaders, corporations, military organizations, and citizens in every walk of life seem to either be ignorant of or shrug off the truth about Dihydrogen Monoxide as not being applicable to them.

Dangers of Bread
http://www.geoffmetcalf.com/bread.html
Dangers of Bread
A recent Cincinnati Enquirer headline read, "Smell of baked bread may be health hazard." The article went on to describe the dangers of the smell of baking bread. The main danger, apparently, is that the organic components of this aroma may break down ozone (I'm not making this stuff up).
I was horrified. When are we going to do something about bread- induced global warming? Sure, we attack tobacco companies, but when is the government going to go after Big Bread?

Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide
http://www.dhmo.org/
Ban Dihydrogen Monoxide
Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid form causes severe tissue damage. Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent, DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

California's Velcro Crop under Challenge
http://home.inreach.com/kumbach/velcro.html
California's Velcro Crop under Challenge
California's important Velcro crop, vital to the clothing, footwear, and sporting goods industries, has been severely stressed by drought, disease, and pests.
Velcro? an engineered crop, consists of two distinct strains: hooks and loops. As any user of Velcro knows, a strip of hooks clings to a strip of loops as the springy hook-shaped fibers latch through tiny but firm loops. Gentle pressure allows the hook strip to be pulled from the loop strip. The user may repeat the process time and again, making this product a convenient, versatile replacement for zippers, buttons, snaps, laces, and other forms of fastener in wide-ranging applications.
