Management Information: Supporting success in primary schools
http://www.becta.org.uk/schools/smanagers/mis_brochure.pdf
A leaflet entitled Management Information: Supporting success in primary schools aims to show how MIS can reduce administrative tasks and leave more time for effective management and teaching.
It covers the various areas that MIS can support, including:
unique pupil numbers | target setting |
reporting | links with UK LEAs and the DfES | liaison with other schools | IEPs |
attendance |
It also provides a comprehensive directory of where to find more information and guidance about MIS. Key points include the need for MIS to be embedded in whole-school planning and involving all staff, and the need to start with an ICT audit covering how information is managed in the school.

What is a management information system (MIS)
http://www.ictadvice.org.uk/index.php?section=ap&cat=001&rid=195
What is a management information system (MIS)
A Management information System (MIS) is essentially a computer program on which all important pupil information can be stored.
It will save you time doing many repetitive tasks. We all take photocopiers for granted now and they are essential aren't they? Computers will be in the same category.
At the click of a button a teacher will be able to print off class lists and records and communicate the data to other teachers.
Collation and analysis of data will be done more easily. The arrival of a new pupil will be quickly accommodated and the relevant information promptly despatched to all staff who will need it, with minimal use of paper

Managing data in secondary schools (uk)
http://buildingthegrid.becta.org.uk/index.php?resId=628#res628
Releasing Potential, Raising Attainment is a DfES booklet offering practical guidance in how schools can establish effective management information systems, and test their systems against the minimum requirements for pupil performance data management.
It aims to give:
- practical guidance on how to establish effective management information systems
- the opportunity to test existing systems against the minimum requirements
- access to other examples and extension materials on web sites for those wishing to develop further their analytical skills and systems.
A case study showing the developing use of ICT to support curriculum management across a school demonstrates how one school has started to develop a solution to deal with its particular data-management needs. It shows how the school has used the ICT facilities available to it, such as MS Excel spreadsheet, the Autumn Package, and SIMS.

Oasis
http://www.beaver-software.com/
Oasis - Open Accounting Software for Independent Schools
The origins of Oasis go back to 1982 when a system was designed and developed for Harrow School. In 1990 Beaver decided to redesign and re-launch the system. The objective was to provide the bursary with the most functional software available - but with the flexibility to change easily as circumstances dictate. The new system was named OASIS
Although OASIS started life as a system primarily aimed at the bursary of independent schools, it now also includes a considerable number of facilities to help with the administration of pupil records. Users that are happy with their existing administration software can share data easily with the bursary data-base, ensuring that pupil names, addresses, and other shared data are always current.
OASIS was launched in 1993 and was the first accounting system for Independent schools to be available in a Windows PC environment.
