Advice for New Special Education Teachers

Advice for New Special Education Teachers
Surviving the First Few Months of School
When I got into special education 28 years ago, it was a conscious decision. I had worked in a residential setting for children with extreme behavioral disabilities. It was fun so I decided to make a career of it.
You, too, may have chosen the special education field, but it's equally likely that it may have chosen you. Nearly half of all special education teachers are not certified in special education and never really intended to work there. So, many of you are in the field because teachers who are both certified and willing to teach special education are in chronically short supply.

Hunter Of The Past ADHD
http://www.adders.org/freeware/hunter.html
Hunter Of The Past ADHD
An original children's book on ADHD in interactive format. You cannot buy this book in the shops, it is only available, free, from here.
In this book, Caroline Hensby and Bernard Braham give children an opportunity to reframe their ADD/ADHD in a less pathological light, to see themselves as having potential and strengths, and to hear the sound of hope for the future. It's empowering, enlightening, and altogether healing.
That's why this is such an important book. For your child, in fact, it may be the most important book on ADD in the world...
"For a child, being labeled with ADD or ADHD can be a double-wounding. First, of course, there's the ADD itself, and the academic and/or social problems which have probably plagued the child his or her entire life as a result of it. But on top of that, there's the often even more painful wounding of being told that he or she has a "disorder" and, compared to others, is "deficient." These are very strong words, and children take such things very seriously. They're extraordinarily good at living up (or down) to our expectations of them, and such labels can often be painful to wear.

The pack is based on a programme used extensively and with great success in several states in the USA to teach literacy to all children. This UK edition has been developed following trials of the American materials in English primary schools as part of a DfEE funded research project.
