New Century School House (Middle School)

New Century School House (Middle School)
The New Century School House is essentially three 1950s style school buildings that have been totally gutted of all relics of industrial age education. The rooms are bare and without purpose. Educators are invited to adopt and repurpose individual rooms in either of the three buildings (Elementary, Middle, or High Schools) as learning spaces where students can learn in ways that are more relevant to a technology and information rich world.

On-line courses for Key Stage 3
http://www.becta.org.uk/teaching/ks3online/index.html
The purpose of this pilot project was to develop and deliver using the latest educational technology three complete, high-quality, innovative and interactive courses for students at Key Stage 3 in mathematics, Japanese and Latin.
The findings show advantages in permitting access outside school, high visual impact of using multimedia materials as this enhances learning and is motivational, and in pupil progress being trackable remotely. Key to successful independent learning is good support (for instance on-line e-tutor, effective teachers, on-line discussion forums and so on) and clear written instructions at the appropriate literacy level. The evaluators recommended establishing clearer standards for network configuration and connectivity.
The 12-unit Japanese course, developed by the BBC and the Japan Foundation, Nihongo Centre, was delivered on line. The course used a variety of animated cartoon characters and high-quality sound and video to engage pupils in an 'immersive' language-acquisition experience.
The RM mathsALIVE! course used on-line materials in conjunction with an interactive whiteboard to support whole-class teaching and was designed around the KS3 National Strategy, numeracy framework.
The Granada Result Cambridge Latin project used CD-ROM technology to deliver 'media-rich' content including material filmed in Pompeii. A lesson-planning system allowed teachers to select and sequence the learning activities either on or off line.

Framework for teaching mathematics: Years 7, 8 and 9
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/strands/mathematics/mathsframework/
The Framework for teaching mathematics: Years 7, 8 and 9 is a vital part of a comprehensive support package available to teachers and headteachers. It is based closely on the Programmes of Study for mathematics in the National Curriculum for 2000. The Framework is proving to be a valuable resource in pilot schools and I am encouraged by the positive feedback we have already received from teachers about it and the other material prepared for the strategy by our team of professional advisers.

KS3 : Framework for teaching English: Years 7, 8 and 9
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/strands/english/englishframework/
The Framework for Teaching English: Years 7, 8 and 9 sets out an ambitious agenda for all abilities. It contains challenges to stretch the gifted and talented, and an imperative to act quickly to bring underachieving pupils up to the level of their peers. Most of all, it equips all pupils for the world in which they will live and work - a world which places a high premium on the written and spoken word, where reading and writing permeate every aspect of life, and where pleasures often derive from good discussion, excellent books and the power of writing.

Key Stage 3 National Strategy
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/keystage3/
The challenge now is to build on the primary success and transform standards in Key Stage 3 in the same way. Secondary, and in some areas Middle schools, will increasingly see pupils arriving with higher levels of attainment, and will wish to match that attainment with high expectations of what pupils can achieve between 11 and 14.
The Key Stage 3 National Strategy is about making education for 11 to 14 year olds challenging, demanding, vigorous and inspiring across the whole curriculum.

The Standards Site(UK) Key Stage 3 KS3
http://www.standards.dfee.gov.uk/keystage3/
The Key Stage 3 Strategy is central to achieving our wider objectives at secondary level. We believe our proposals will enable us to achieve much higher standards for 14 year olds than we have ever achieved before. We want to work together with both Local Education Authorities and schools to turn this vision into a reality.
