Managing ICT costs in schools: report
This report summarises work undertaken with 43 schools between 2002 and 2005 in a series of projects which focused on the total cost of ownership (TCO) of ICT. The data gathered using the Becta Total Cost of Ownership model are shown in tables and charts.
The projects highlighted how knowledge of the full costs of ICT can support management investment decisions. The key messages in this report will enable headteachers, ICT decision-makers, local authority officers and governors to develop a strategy for sustainable ICT provision appropriate to their schools. The summary sheet which accompanies this report also contains all the key messages and may be useful for wider distribution.

FITS OM: Assessment
Becta have developed a spreadsheet tool to help schools assess their current ICT operations management. The tool is based on FITS OM (Framework for ICT Technical Support Operations Management) and asks a number of yes/no questions on key activities that should be carried out for each of the functions.
After all of the questions are answered the spreadsheet will produce a graph that shows the percentage of the implementation of each function in your school. The tool can be used to plan to improve current practice by identifying gaps in the schools ICT operations management.

Transforming Learning in the School of the Future : Review
http://www.future-learning.net/
Transforming Learning in the School of the Future : Review
This web site has developed from many ideas representing the professional experiences over 80 Naace members. By classifying those ideas, identifying the key property of each idea and arranging these properties in order of recurrence, we have created the Naace Future Learning Toolkit - a checklist that can be used to confirm the presence of each key element within a school's plan for transforming learning. The result represents a reference point for a Naace concensus about what is meant by 'Transformed Education', and how it can be brought about in the School of the Future.
The Future Learning Toolkit is more than a self review of existing practice. It maps out an ambitious journey to go beyond what is currently accepted as best practice, in order to make the systemic changes needed to be transformational rather than just optimal.
The composite audit tool indicates the extent to which the selected key enablers have been considered and incorporated into the transformation plan.

Although there has been a strong push to get educational technology into the hands of teachers and students, many obstacles to implementation still exist. Equipment may not be placed in easily accessible locations. Hardware and software often pose problems for teachers in the classroom, and just-in-time technical support may be unavailable. Teachers may lack the time and the motivation to learn technology skills. Professional development activities may not provide ongoing, hands-on training for teachers or practical strategies for implementing technology into lesson plans.

FITS (Framework for ICT Technical Support)
http://www.becta.org.uk/tsas
FITS stands for Framework for ICT Technical Support and it is based on the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL).
ITIL is derived from the collective experiences of ICT technical support providers all over the UK. It represents their learning curve over the last 20 years and this has been distilled into a set of common processes applicable to any establishment using ICT. We have applied them to schools, and FITS is designed to enable you to by-pass all the mistakes commonly made and implement them successfully from the start.
The emphasis of FITS is on proactive tasks as well as reactive ones. It views technical support not just as a function responsible for resolving incidents, but as a service provider whose main objective is to prevent incidents from occuring in the first place. We see this as the ultimate goal of technical support and we aim to help you make it happen.
