Developing digital portfolios: investigating how digital portfolios can facilitate pupil talk about learning 2006
The Digital Portfolio Project at Newcastle University aimed over one year (2002/2003) to support teachers in producing, storing and accessing assessment portfolios of learner’s work using ICT.
A major element of this was the investigation of the impact these portfolios had on teachers and learners, particularly focusing on how they could be used to facilitate pupil talk about the learning process and metacognition.

FolioMaker
http://www.foliosinternational.com/about_fm.php
FolioMaker is an Application that creates digital portfolios. Our aim is to keep things as simple as they need to be, thus allowing the user to concentrate on their content rather than the container.
With FolioMaker a user simply clicks on the interface to insert their content (docs, video, audio images etc), they can then choose to burn the portfolio to disc or save it to a network or removable storage device.
When a school licenses FolioMaker they actually get a tailor-made piece of software with the school logo and colour, so it becomes a great "marketing tool" for the school.

An Overview of E-Portfolios
http://tinyurl.com/yrnngg
An Overview of E-Portfolios
E-portfolios are a valuable learning and assessment tool. An e-portfolio is a digitized collection of artifacts including demonstrations, resources, and accomplishments that represent an individual, group, or institution. This collection can be comprised of text-based, graphic, or multimedia elements archived on a Web site or on other electronic media such as a CD-ROM or DVD. An e-portfolio is more than a simple collection—it can also serve as an administrative tool to manage and organize work created with different applications and to control who can see the work. E-portfolios encourage personal reflection and often involve the exchange of ideas and feedback.
This report defines and categorizes e-portfolios, offers examples of higher education e-portfolio implementations, reviews e-portfolio technology, and addresses adoption issues.

Elgg
http://elgg.org/
Elgg's initial concept was as a different type of e-portfolio, developed to contrast most current e-portfolio systems which are nothing more than form filling exercises to satisfy institutional requirements.
However, as the system has grown and developed (thanks to huge user input) Elgg has morphed into what we have coined a personal learning landscape. This learning landscape provides learners with the ability to control their own learning through the creation of their own online learning profile and interaction within learning communities (both formal and ad-hoc), connection to other learners and resources, reflective potential, information gathering and sharing.

Portfolios to Webfolios and Beyond: Levels of Maturation
Descriptions of developmental stages offer institutions guidance about their place in the process and how to move to the next level
Webfolios may have the most significant effect on education since the introduction of formal schooling. When fully matured and implemented by capable professional educators throughout every discipline in an educational institution, webfolios promise a viable alternative to current, high-stakes testing, which focuses education on test-taking rather than teaching and learning.
