The GCE AS/A level consultation results Sept 2006
For the recent review of AS/A levels, draft qualification and subject criteria were developed in autumn 2005 in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, awarding bodies, subject associations, Higher Education and other interested parties.
An online consultation on the draft criteria was carried out on the QCA website from 20 March 2006 until 8 May 2006. QCA received over 3200 responses in total, which was an excellent result. The findings of the consultation can be found in the GCE AS/A level qualification and subject criteria: consultation summary reports, which can be accessed from this page. DELLS and CCEA carried out their own consultations in Wales and Northern Ireland.
The subject and qualification criteria have now been finalised, subject to sections on ?tretch and challenge?being added by December 2006, and awarding bodies have begun their specification developments.

New A levels: successors to VCEs Vocational Certificates of Education
Vocational Certificates of Education (VCEs) have been redesigned to become General Certificates of Education (GCEs). The new qualifications have an AS/A2 structure, comparable to existing GCEs. They are no longer known as vocational A levels as they are now part of the suite of A levels.
The revised qualifications will be introduced for first teaching from September 2005. The first AS qualifications will be available for certification in summer 2006 and the A level will be available for certification for the first time in summer 2007.
Subject criteria, performance descriptions and unit titles from the different awarding body specifications can now be found on the relevant subject pages on the QCA website at www.qca.org.uk.
