Testing Our Schools USA
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/schools/
Testing Our Schools USA
What are the uses and misuses of tests?
Do higher test scores mean better schools?
How does the intense pressure to raise test scores affect the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom?
These are some of the questions FRONTLINE set out to explore in interviews with educators, policymakers, and educational testing experts across the country. What we found is that although standards-based reform has widespread support, experts see a danger in our reliance on standardized tests as the primary measure of school quality. Without the right kinds of tests, they say, and without an understanding of their proper uses, we may do more harm than good to public education in America.

FAST - Free Assessment Summary Tool - Online
http://www.getfast.ca/
Traditionally, teaching assessments are conducted at the end of a course - a practice precluding students from offering constructive feedback while they are still in the course. However, conducting instructor-designed and administered web-based course assessments opens a proactive dialogue with students about teaching, the course, and the entire learning process.
The FAST project is committed to providing users with a simple online tool for assessing their students' impressions of their courses and their teaching. Using the software does not cost anything so if this is your first visit, become a user and see if FAST would be useful for you and your students.
FAST is an anonymous online survey tool that automatically summarizes students' impressions of a course and/or teacher and supplies the data directly to the teacher.
FAST allows a teacher to develop an online survey that students can complete 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Teachers can ask up to 20 questions (and change them whenever they want) to determine how students are finding their teaching and the course. The software automatically summarizes and consolidates the students' comments, in real-time, on the web or into a downloadable customized Excel spreadsheet.
FAST is contractually obligated to remain free until (at least) October 2006. Any changes after that date would require the unanimous consent of all co-owners.

A Collection of Assessment Strategies
http://www.educ.state.ak.us/tls/frameworks/mathsci/ms5_2as1.htm
Alaska Department of Education & Early Development
A Collection of Assessment Strategies
Each portion of this section describes and analyzes a particular type of assessment strategy, then lists sources of further information. Following those discussions, samples show how each type of strategy might be used at various grade levels.
The following assessment strategies are examples of classroom-based assessment. Most of the examples are embedded assessment (that is, the assessment is part of instruction and informs the teacher how to adjust instruction during the teaching process). They may also provide ongoing documentation of a student's ability relative to the Alaska Content Standards. These examples are not designed to be used as final assessment rubrics to quantify whether or not the students have achieved the Alaska Content Standards. Performance tasks addressing the content standards and related assessment rubrics for those tasks will be developed at a later date.

US School Reports ... see them all

A new online database developed by the Heritage Foundation allows parents and teachers to go to one Web site to find all the school report cards in the United States. To help schools create more useful accountability sites, the Foundation has identified 10 model report cards.
This map contains links to samples of Internet-based report cards in each of the 50 states (note that some states have no online report cards). Parents and other interested persons can click on the map to learn more about their children's schools, both public and private, and to compare and contrast different report cards. To the left of the map are links to various national report cards, profiling schools in multiple states.

Adopting, Adapting, or Developing an Aligned Assessment for Your Lesson
While your ultimate goal will be to help all students master the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and demonstrate student mastery through high scores on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS), you do not want to wait until the end-of-year test to know whether your students learned the knowledge and skills. Instead, you will want to develop, adapt, or adopt assessments that will tell you whether students have learned what you expect them to learn within any given lesson.

DfEE Advice (UK) Assessment of Pupils
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/a-z/KEY%5FSTAGE%5FASSESSMENT.html
The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) is responsible for the development and administration of the National Curriculum on behalf of the Secretary of State. This responsibility extends to the marking of statutory tests at Key Stages 2 and 3 and the audit of the marking of Key Stage 1 tests. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority contracts External Marking Agencies to perform this function and closely monitors their work to ensure standards in timing and quality are met.

DfEE Advice (UK) Baseline Assessment
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/a-z/BASELINE%5FASSESSMENT.html
Baseline assessment and target setting are fundamental to raising standards and improving the basic skills of literacy and numeracy. Head teachers should make clear to governors and parents that baseline assessment is a vital part of the school’s strategy for raising standards.

DfEE Advice (UK) : Benchmarking
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/a-z/BENCHMARKING.html
Benchmarking is the term given to the process of measuring standards of actual performance against those achieved by others with broadly similar characteristics. Head teachers and senior managers need to be familiar with the process and the information it provides to assist them in their planning for school improvement.

DfEE Advice (UK) : Reports
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/a-z/PUPIL%5FREPORTS.html
By law head teachers of maintained schools are responsible for ensuring that they send a written report to parents on their children’s achievements once during the school year (or to the pupil where they are 18 years or over). The Education (Individual Pupils’ Achievements) Regulations prescribe the minimum content of these reports.

DfEE Advice : Pupil Records
http://www.dfee.gov.uk/a-z/PUPIL%5FRECORDS.html
From 1 March 2000 there have been new requirements for the keeping, disclosure and (from 1 May 2000) transfer of a pupil’s educational record. These take account of the Data Protection Act 1998 and strengthen the arrangements for the transfer of information when a pupil changes school.

Sharp Reports
http://www.sharpreports.co.uk/
Every teacher knows that writing reports is hard work. Very hard work. Each child is different and each child deserves a detailed, individual report. This website is designed to ease the load of the Key Stage 2 teacher. It provides an easy to use database of phrases suitable for inclusion in KS 2 reports.
The comments are not intended to be used as a substitute for carefully considered, individualised remarks on a child's progress; they are an aid to composition, helping teachers to formulate their ideas when writing children's reports. Rather than being a menu of ready made reports, they are a list of ingredients for the teacher to work with and combine as appropriate.
