Cultural Images of Librarians
http://www.tk421.net/essays/nwyt.pdf
Cultural Images of Librarians
Librarian stereotypes in popular culture support the image of a librarian as a shushing school marm who does little more than stamp and shelve books. Maybe that’s all you’ve seen librarians do.
However, this perception is about as inaccurate as believing that Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan is nothing more than a glorified bank teller.

Competing in a Google world
How can the library compete in a world where the reflex reaction to any query that starts with 'who, what, when, where' is 'Google it!'?
What is it that librarians need to do to ensure survival in this world? What can librarians do to define the difference and enrich the experience of information seeking and delivery?

But man -- and woman -- do not live by information alone. At night, our gal trades her Birkenstocks for beads and serves her adoring public's entertainment needs with the music and dance of the Middle East

Librarians : Conditions of Service
http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos068.htm
The traditional concept of a library is being redefined from a place to access paper records or books to one that also houses the most advanced media, including CD-ROM, the Internet, virtual libraries, and remote access to a wide range of resources. Consequently, librarians, or information professionals, increasingly are combining traditional duties with tasks involving quickly changing technology.

The Future of the Digital Library

The Future of the Digital Library
In the Middle Ages libraries were centers of learning that attracted scholars to their organized body of literature. Today, it is possible for me to zip you a message containing more information than was in Thomas Jefferson? library. How do current technology trends affect the way we think about library collections?

School library self-evaluation frameworks
The following self-evaluation frameworks for primary and secondary school libraries/learning resource centres have been produced by the DfES in conjunction with the School Libraries Working Group.
They provide school librarians with a clear way of assessing the quality of what they provide and measuring outcomes, as well as providing evidence of achievement and identifying areas that could be improved. They also provide practical advice and suggestions for improving the way that the library supports pupil learning.

Library : Toolkit for Change
http://www.mla.gov.uk/action/pn/change.asp
Libraries of all kinds are undergoing change at an unprecedented rate. For example, School and other Education libraries are redefining their roles to support e-learning and to help students to develop the information literacy required to operate in the ?ge of Information?
Redefining the role and the culture of libraries is also leading to new forms of electronic service provision for teenagers and Silver surfers? socially excluded groups and ethnic minorities ? with much more change to come in all these areas.
To help with this a "Toolkit for Change" can be accessed as a Word document ( 870 KB)

Advice and Information for New Librarians
http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/newbies.htm
Advice and Information for New Librarians
Every summer LM_NET receives, from librarians who have just been hired for their first libray job, questions like OK, I've got the Job, Now what do I do.?
Over the years there have been some excellent answers, below is a sampling of what can be found in the LM_NET archives. (http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/archive/). I used these search terms: "new librarian", newbies, and survival. "New librarian" returns more than 600 hits but, I only examined the first 100 since they are ranked by relevance. Survival returns both librarian survival advice and wilderness survival books, but the list is not too long.
