School Life in the Past : SCoPE Site Lesson Plan
In this lesson students learn about school life in the past through literature and a visit to a one-room schoolhouse. As an alternative to a field trip, the teacher leads the students through a virtual field trip using one or more of the one-room schools web sites identified in the Teacher Resources section. Students learn about the school building, school routine, school materials and roles of the students and teacher. Students compose questions to answer on their field trip. Upon return, journal entries of the field trip record answers to the questions.

Rural Education in the Late 1800s
http://www.cobleskill.edu/schools/mcs/CSBest/school.htm
Rural Education in the Late 1800s
In the late 1800's schools were quite different from what they are now. They were generally a one-roomed building with a big wood or coal burning stove in the center. The grades usually ranged from first to eighth and were all taught in 10-15 minute sessions by one teacher. Having everyone in one room was an advantage to the younger grades because they could be taught by the older kids and could listen to their lessons.

History of Education : Selected Moments
http://fcis.oise.utoronto.ca/~daniel_schugurensky/assignment1/
This is a site about education during the 20th century, organized by decades. It includes short descriptions of 'educational episodes' that took place in that period. The episode in question could be a policy, a court case, a piece of legislation, a scholarly article, a new theory, a research report, an incident, the release of a book, a speech, an empirical finding, a conference, the opening or a closure of an institution, a movie, an anecdote, or anything, big or small, that tells us something about education theory, policy, politics, research or practice during the last century.

One-Room Schoolhouse

One-Room Schoolhouse
Here a single, dedicated teacher taught reading, writing and arithmetic to seven grades of boys and girls in a classroom at times so crowded that the young students had to sit along the edge of the teacher's platform or cram them selves into the aisles between the desks, their warm bodies supplementing the heat that in winter radiated from the iron chunk stove in the center of the room.
