The English Educational System
Education in England is divided into: primary, secondary, further and higher education. Compulsory education lasts for 11 years; statutory schooling ages are between 5 and 16 years.
ost pupils transfer from primary to secondary school at age 11 years. However, a system of middle schools also exists: here pupils are transferred from primary school at either age 8 or 9 years, then onto secondary education at age 12 or 13 years.

As from 1996, the IBE has undertaken the preparation of profiles of national education systems, using the information included in the reports on the development of education, supplemented with data from other sources. As the preliminary versions of the profiles are sent to the countries concerned in order for their content to be checked—or for additional information or clarifications, depending on the situation—this method emphasizes the co-operative way in which the profiles are established, the IBE assuming the major part of the work in an effort to provide a useful service.
The Internet version of World data on education continues to be updated regularly and now contains the profiles of 158 national education systems (either in English, French or Spanish, depending on the country).

In some places there may be only one school, so you have little choice - it's that or boarding in the UK. But more and more you have the choice in many locations. The schools which are reasonably well recognised in the area you are moving to will be known to your company, to the British Embassy or Consulate, or perhaps to the local church or local expatriate organisations. This gives you a start. But also it is as well to speak to your child's current Head and to contact organisations in the UK who deal with schools abroad for example, associations such as COBISEC, ECIS (European Council of International Schools), or organisations such as ISCIS (Independent Schools Council information service) or Gabbitas Educational Consultants.
