Weblogs and Blogging - Part 2
http://www.freepint.com/issues/160502.htm#feature
As noted in the first part of this article
, many
commentators have suggested that Blogger and similar programs have
resulted in even more unreliable or mindless content on the Web than
there was before.
Some weblogs wither once the first flush of enthusiasm passes, while
others go from strength to strength, attracting contributions and
feedback from experts and interested Internet surfers. The weblogs
discussed below are all maintained by experts in the topic covered by
the weblog; all appear to have the potential to continue to attract an
audience.

Weblogs: a history and perspective
http://www.rebeccablood.net/essays/weblog_history.html
In 1998 there were just a handful of sites of the type that are now identified as weblogs
In September of 2000 there are thousands of weblogs: topic-oriented weblogs, alternative viewpoints, astute examinations of the human condition as reflected by mainstream media, short-form journals, links to the weird, and free-form notebooks of ideas. Traditional weblogs perform a valuable filtering service and provide tools for more critical evaluation of the information available on the web. Free-style blogs are nothing less than an outbreak of self-expression.

The Weblog Tool Roundup
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/02/18/index3a.html
Most weblogs follow a standard format: short, dated posts with the latest entry up top. When a new post is added, older material is usually shuffled off to an archive, and an archive page listing every entry is updated to reflect the change.
They all basically work the same way: You type in your text and the tool plugs that into a template, creates a new file, and uploads the results to your server. These templates are customizable, of course, letting you design your site to look however you want.
But last year, as I was playing around with some of the second-generation tools, something clicked: Yes, these things make life simpler, but what's key is that they put template-driven sites in the hands of the average site-builder.

What is a weblog?
http://guardianunlimited.co.uk/weblogarticle/0,6799,394059,00.html
A weblog is, literally, an individual's log of the web - a diary of web pages to recommend to others. The Guardian weblog is our variation on the theme - it's a diary of the best online news and features.
