Amazon River : (Kit of Digital Assets) http://www.kitzu.com/ Amazon River : (Kit of Digital Assets)
The Amazon River is considered to be the largest river in the world by volume. It has the greatest total river flow than the next eight largest rivers combined! The length has been measured to as much as 4,195 miles long. The main river can be as wide as 6 miles .... “Students and teachers around the world can access pre-made collections, or "kits," of various digital assets - still images, background music, narratives, video and text. Each kit is built around a common theme, or curricular topic.
For students, this becomes the construction paper of the 21st century --allowing them to create reports and projects filled with rich, immersive media for communicating their vision of whatever subjects they chose.
As they master the technology, they will progress from building projects with supplied materials to projects where they find or create their own resources -- a strategy that results in truly authentic assessment as measured by the projects produced."

The Amazon: The World's Greatest River http://www.exploratorium.edu/learning_studio/news/february97.html Tour Along The Amazon: The World's Greatest River
Our journey began in Iquitos, Peru, a noisy city of 400,000 and the largest in the Peruvian Amazon. Motorcycle taxis race through the streets and the docks and open market bustle with activity. The markets are filled with products from the rain forest, most legal and some illegal. It's not uncommon to find endangered animals quartered and sold by the kilo. Sadly, enforcement is difficult and people try to make ends meet any way that they can.

Rivers Seen From Space http://www.athenapub.com/rivers1.htm Rivers Seen From Space
A survey of satellite and aerial views from NASA/JPL sources ranging from Gemini and Landsat to TOPSAR and SIR-C (from the 1960s through 1990s) includes numerous pictures of the Nile, Amazon, Mississippi, and other major river systems. Their striking visual patterns (enhanced by the false-color imagery used in interpretation) reveal a diversity of both natural and human-made processes within important zones of long-term habitation.
Why Rivers Flood http://www.sln.org.uk/geography/enquiry/we30.htm Why Rivers Flood
It may seem hard to believe that a small, slow-flowing stream or gentle river could cause serious damage to people and the places in which they live and work, but looks can be deceptive!
Importance of Rivers http://www.aquatic.uoguelph.ca/rivers/chintro.htm Importance of Rivers
Rivers are of immense importance geologically, biologically, historically and culturally. Although they contain only about 0.0001% of the total amount of water in the world at any given time, rivers are vital carriers of water and nutrients to areas all around the earth.
Investigating Rivers http://www.4learning.co.uk/essentials/geography/units/rivers_bi.shtml Investigating Rivers
Cities, towns and villages have grown up on or near rivers because people use the water for many purposes. People need water to drink and to grow food. They use rivers for transporting people and goods.
Some rivers are dammed to form reservoirs for drinking water, or to make electricity called hydro-electric power.

Investigating river characteristics http://www.ictadvice.org.uk/index.php?rid=4876 Pupils conducted a fieldwork investigation of a river at different locations along its course, using ICT to collect, record, present, and analyse the results. The activity was significantly enhanced by the use of portable computers, a digital camera, a datalogging unit and a flow meter. Year 8 pupils from a rural comprehensive in Cumbria completed the activity.
River flood http://www.ictadvice.org.uk/index.php?section=tl&cat=001002004&rid=4880 Pupils in a Year 8 class in a school in Devon took part in fieldwork in which they discovered that the local River Erme seemed to have become more prone to flooding than in the past. They were set the task of finding out why this might be the case.
The teacher prepared a spreadsheet to model the link between rainfall intensity and the response of the stream, and entered data about local rainfall and stream flow. Working in pairs, the pupils spent a lesson at the computer selecting different rainfall characteristics and varying the land use near the river. The pupils were able to create flood hydrographs relating to different conditions and to suggest a range of hypotheses to explain why the river was flooding more frequently.
River features and processes http://www.ictadvice.org.uk/index.php?rid=4868 River features and processes
Children investigated river features and processes present on the River Porter in Sheffield as part of a fieldwork week after their English, mathematics and sciences national tests.
The activity made use of video, word-processing software, and a datalogger and its associated software. Year 5 children, working at a school in a former mining village, completed this activity.
