Information Handling in the Primary School
The eight activities in this area represent a taster of two sets of NCET materials which have been designed to support primary school information handling work: Getting Started with Information Handling (GS) and Making Sense of Information (MSOI). The first consists of a pack of ten activity cards which cover a range of subject areas and age groups, a booklet for teachers and some ready-made data files on disc to support some of the activities. Making Sense of Information comprises a booklet which presents the process loop in detail, Making Sense of Information (order no. C91007), priced ?5.00 a set of activity sheets and a fully supported video which shows the process in action in schools throughout the country.

Representing Information Graphically
In this unit pupils learn how to use ICT to represent information graphically.
They learn how to create pictograms and how to answer simple questions on the data shown in their pictograms. Pupils will use a graphing package to create their work and will learn how to enter data correctly and how to use icons.
Pupils will apply what they have learnt in this unit when classifying objects in science or mathematics; undertaking investigations in mathematics, science and geography.

The Information Around Us
In this unit pupils learn that information exists in a variety of forms, including text, still and moving pictures, charts and sounds and that different media are used for different purposes. They learn that ICT can be used to communicate and handle information in a variety of ways. Pupils should be able to apply what they have learned in this unit when they are looking for and presenting information.
