Designing and Teaching a Game Studies Class
In Fall 2004, I taught a class with MIT Comparative Media Studies department head Henry Jenkins III and graduate student Brett Camper as my TA. Together, we developed a curriculum, reading list and projects designed to address what we thought MIT undergraduates really needed to learn about game design.
Despite deliberately low-key publicity and hefty project requirements, about forty students registered for the course and collaboratively designed card games and digital games over the twelve-week session, which culminated in a public showing in the video arcade in MIT's student center.
