Developing social, emotional and behavioural skills in secondary schools ... Report
The Secondary (UK) National Strategy's pilot programme, Developing social, emotional and behavioural skills, was introduced to 54 schools in five local authorities in the summer term of 2005 and to a sixth authority one term later. Ofsted evaluated the pilot programme over five terms in 11 schools.
The schools were selected to represent a range of types of school. After five terms, the greatest impact in the schools was on teachers' attitudes towards the idea of social, emotional and behavioural skills and their understanding of how to develop these skills systematically within subject lessons.
Where the pilot was most effective, teachers adjusted teaching methods to take account of the pupils' specific needs. As a result, pupils worked better in teams, were better able to recognise and articulate their feelings, and showed greater respect for each other's differences and strengths.

About personal, social and health education (QCA UK)
http://www.qca.org.uk/7835.html
About personal, social and health education (QCA UK) PSHE
Personal, social and health education (PSHE) helps to give children and young people the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Learning opportunities could happen across and beyond the curriculum, in specific lessons, and in assemblies, tutorial programmes, circle time, special school projects and other activities and events that enrich pupils' experiences.
The information on these pages will help all those interested in knowing more about PSHE in schools. There are links to the national framework for PSHE and citizenship at key stages 1 and 2, and the national framework for PSHE at key stages 3 and 4.
