Unit 1B: Growing plants

Unit 1B: Growing plants
This unit introduces children to the idea of plants as living things which grow and change. Children should become aware of similarities and differences in plants.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
- turning ideas into a form that can be tested
- making and recording observations
- using results to communicate what happened and to draw conclusions.
Children also have opportunities to link their knowledge of how plants grow to their understanding of science and to ways in which growing plants should be treated with sensitivity.
This unit takes approximately 9 hours.

Green plants as living things
There are thousands of different types of plants in the world. Some are so small you would have to look through a microscope to see them while others can be as tall as a block of flats.
Plants that have flowers are called flowering plants. There are four parts to a flowering plant: the flower, the leaves, the stem and the roots. Each part has a job to do in helping the plant carry out important life processes.
