Greece is made up of the mainland and numerous islands scattered through the Aegean and Adriatic Seas.
The first Greek settlements were small independent communities cut off from each other by mountains. There was not much good, fertile soil so there was competition for land. People were very loyal to the city they came form, only joining together when people from outside, like the Persians, threatened.
