From the end of the 15th century English sailors started on a series of daring and dangerous expeditions to claim new land from which they could import things such as cotton, spices and precious metals. To do this they needed strong navies.
Henry VIII built dockyards and established a navy of 50 ships and about 8000 sailors. One of his ships the Mary Rose sank before his eyes on 19th July 1545, it was dredged up again on11th October 1982, watched by Prince Charles.
